Assistant Controller

Gateway Engineers is a 250-person civil engineering firm with approximately $55 million in annual revenue, serving public and private sector clients throughout the region. With roughly 1,500 invoices processed monthly and a growing portfolio of complex projects, due to our continued growth we are seeking an Assistant Controller (5–7 years’ experience) to strengthen our accounting operations and support our Controller.

This role is ideal for a technically strong accountant who enjoys structure, accountability, and ownership—and who wants to play a key role in a well-established, growth-oriented professional services firm.

Position Overview

The Assistant Controller will be responsible for the integrity of the monthly close process, financial reporting accuracy, and day-to-day accounting operations.

Responsibilities

Financial Close & Reporting

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and supporting documentation
  • Assist with preparation of internal financial statements

Operational Accounting

  • Oversee billing reconciliation and revenue recognition in coordination with billing team
  • Review WIP schedules and project accounting reports
  • Support AR and collections reporting
  • Ensure AP coding accuracy and expense classifications
  • Maintain fixed asset schedules

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Strengthen and document accounting processes
  • Maintain internal controls and segregation of duties
  • Respond to requests from our external review and tax preparation teams
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Provide technical guidance to accounting staff
  • Identify workflow improvements and automation opportunities
  • Develop clear documentation for recurring processes

Qualifications

  • 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA preferred (or CPA-track) – bonus and support available
  • Experience in professional services, engineering, or project-based accounting strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of revenue recognition and WIP
  • Advanced Excel skills
